The challenge

Guest rooms are the least efficient space in most homes: a good room, well finished, used a few weeks a year and slightly depressing for the rest. The brief was to stop that happening without producing the usual compromise, where a sofa bed makes the room worse at both jobs. It had to be a genuinely good sitting room, and a genuinely comfortable place to sleep, with the switch between them taking under a minute.

Our approach

Designed as a lounge first with sleeping built in, so it never reads as a spare room waiting to be used.

A lounge that happens to sleep two

The room is planned and furnished as a sitting room — proper seating, a low table, a reading corner, a working light scheme. The bed lives within the joinery wall and comes down when it is needed, which takes about thirty seconds. Because the room was designed as a lounge rather than as a bedroom with a sofa in it, it does not carry the visual apology that convertible rooms usually do.

Guest storage that stays empty

Half the storage wall is deliberately kept clear for visitors, which sounds wasteful until you have stayed somewhere with nowhere to put a suitcase. There is hanging space, a drawer stack, a shelf at luggage height and a mirror. The household's own overflow lives in the other half behind identical shutters, so the room never looks like a storeroom that guests are borrowing.

Restraint as the point

Panchkula homes generally have floor area to spare, which makes over-furnishing the standing temptation. This room resists it. A short material palette, generous circulation, one good piece of art and nothing on the surfaces. The restraint is what lets it flip between two uses without either feeling like an afterthought.

Making the switch effortless

A convertible room only works if converting it is trivial, because anything that takes effort will not be done. Bedding lives in the joinery directly beside the bed rather than in another room. The seating moves without lifting. The side lights are positioned to work in both arrangements, so nothing needs repositioning. The test we set was whether the room could be turned around by one person, in under a minute, without moving anything heavy — and it can.

The outcome

A room that earns its floor area year-round. It is used daily as a sitting room and converts for guests in under a minute, so the household stopped treating it as a spare room they were maintaining for occasional visitors. That is the whole point: a guest suite that is only good three weeks a year is an expensive way to store a bed.
